My name is John Switzer and I live in Toronto, ON, Canada.
I am a wine writer, wine educator and wine judge.
From December 2005 to June 2014 I published a controlled-circulation bi-weekly newsletter, the Winesights Vintages Newsletter (WVN). I closed WVN in July 2014 when the onerous administrative requirements of Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation took effect.
The legacy of WVN continues, however, as I now publish on this blog site wine-related articles and reviews of the five best-value wines in each bi-weekly LCBO Vintages release.
My articles are aimed at a diverse audience of wine lovers – experts, novices and everyone in between. I seek to inform, I strive to make the complex simple and I look for trends in the trade that forecast the future.
I have some biases that will be revealed from time to time:
- the Old World is more interesting than the New World (but the New World is rapidly changing for the better).
- cool climate wines are more interesting than wines from warm regions.
- the best wines are not manipulated.
- the business of wine is almost as interesting as wine itself.
- wine is humbling for everyone, especially the more you know about it…so relax and enjoy it as it is.
I hold the WSET Diploma, I am a WSET Certified Educator and I teach WSET Diploma-level classes at the Independent Wine Education Guild in Toronto where I am the past Director of the Diploma program. Since 2010 I have been a judge on the Rhône panel at the annual Decanter World Wine Awards event in London, England. I was Chief Judge at the VQA Ontario Wine Competition for the 2015 and 2016 editions of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and I am a Certified Specialist in Wine, awarded by the Society of Wine Educators. I am a charter member of the WSET International Diploma Advisory Board, as the representative for Canada.
I welcome feedback and comments of all colours and stripes. To contact me directly send your comments to firstname.lastname@example.org.
